Canada has ranked second in the world on the 2024 Global Cleantech Innovation Index (GCII). Accounting for just half a per cent of the world's population and 13% of companies (or 13 out of 100) listed by Cleantech Group on this year's annual report, it couldn't be any clearer that our nation is a global leader in clean technology and innovation.

The GCII recognizes the world’s top 100 private companies likely to significantly impact the cleantech market over the next decade. Cleantech Group has answered this question annually since the GCII's inaugural year (2009) using the following methodology:

Phase 1 - Nominating companies from five sources, including:

• An expert panel of 80 investor and multi-national corporation representatives
• More than 70 third-party awards where expert assessment was applied
• The global ecosystem, with nominations online at i3connect.com
• Cleantech Group's i3 platform, which tracks investments and partnership history of thousands of companies around the world
• Cleantech Group's sector analysts

Phase 2 - Once nominations are made, Cleantech Group rewards scores to these companies using a system where more validations equate to more points. The GCII's 80 expert panellists then vote on a shortlist of the best performers who have attained the most points based on their knowledge of each company's innovation, market, and ability to execute.

Phase 3 – Data from phases 1 and 2 are pooled and adjusted for geographic and other biases. Companies that retain the highest points at the end of this final phase make it onto Cleantech Group's list of 100.

For the GCII's 2024 version, there were 25,435 nominations from more than 65 countries, a significant 61 per cent increase from the 15,753 nominations in the 2023 report. Nominees are extensively evaluated to create a shortlist of 330 private sector company finalists to be reviewed by the 80 expert GCII panellists.

E Zinc – Zinc reactor technology which stores electricity in zinc metal for large-scale energy storage

Genecis – Bacterial technology to turn food waste into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a high-quality bioplastic

Ionomr Innovations – Durable anion-exchange membrane for fuel cells, fuel production and metal recovery

Mangrove Lithium – A modular platform for the cost-effective production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide

pH-7 – Processes and new methodologies for extractive metallurgy

Summit Nanotech – Lithium and other valuable metals from brine water using advanced nanomaterials

Carbon Upcycling – Technology for sequestering CO2 gas into a solid form within concretes, plastics and coatings

Cycling Materials – Circular supply chain service platform facilitating the recycling of rare earth elements via its proprietary Mag-Xtract and Hydrometallurgy technologies

MineSense - Shovel sensor technology to capture ore in mining waste and provide real-time analytics during extraction

Moment Energy – Recycler of retired electric vehicle batteries into clean, affordable energy storage

Pani Energy – AI-powered water treatment operations and management software

Svante – Energy-efficient technology for capturing carbon dioxide from industrial sources

Canada's global leadership in sustainability is exemplified by its performance on the Global Cleantech Innovation Index in 2023 with 13 private companies -- the second-highest amount of any country. Some of these Canadian companies have made the GCII multiple times, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to advancing clean technologies while making the world more environmentally friendly.

Canadians should celebrate the ingenuity of our home-grown companies hard at work to make today's environment cleaner through the development of new technologies of tomorrow. We must support all Canadian companies pushing to make the world a more sustainable place through continued environmental leadership while adhering to the world-class regulatory regimes our country is known for.

Canada's clean technology and innovation leadership doesn't stop at the companies listed on the GCII 2024.
