#1 - Real Investment, Jobs, and Results
In April, Nova Scotia announced a landmark $210 million offshore oil and gas investment – the first of its kind in a generation, where an international company committed to exploring two offshore parcels, bringing serious capital and global credibility back to the province.
As Premier Houston said, "Nova Scotia is back in the offshore oil and gas business. And this is not just talk. It is real investment in Nova Scotia's offshore."
The scale of the opportunity is staggering. Nova Scotia's offshore holds an estimated 49 billion barrels of oil and 148 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. We've barely scratched the surface.
This investment means more Nova Scotians working in oil and gas – here at home, raising their families, and building their futures.
#2 - A Vision for Nova Scotia's Future
Offshore energy is just the beginning. The province's plan covers a full spectrum of Nova Scotia's resource potential:
Offshore Wind – Nova Scotia is moving forward with Canada's first offshore wind project, known as Wind West. New provincial legislation ensures that Nova Scotians reap the full benefits of this emerging industry.
Natural Gas – Nova Scotia says natural gas is a critical pillar of energy security for both the province and Canada. Developing these resources reduces Canada's dependence on energy imports and builds long-term self-reliance.
Critical Minerals – Nova Scotia has repealed decades-old bans on uranium exploration and is actively pursuing new mining projects to feed domestic and international supply chains while positioning Nova Scotia as a global mining leader.
#3 - Cutting Red Tape. Getting Projects Built.
Bold resource development requires a regulatory system that works. In March, Nova Scotia signed a historic co-operation agreement with the federal government to implement a "one project, one review" model, eliminating duplication between provincial and federal regulators and dramatically shortening approval timelines for major projects.
Nova Scotia is proving that when governments align and cut unnecessary red tape, projects can be built, timelines can move forward expeditiously, jobs can be created, and our communities can benefit over the long term.
#4 – Nova Scotia Has Done it Before
Not too long ago, Nova Scotia was home to a number of offshore projects that generated $3.7 billion in revenue, including $2 billion in direct royalties and an additional $3 billion in local economic spinoff [2]. That money paid for hospitals, schools, roads, and the services families depend on.
The province's vision is to build on that legacy – to make Nova Scotia less dependent on transfer payments and U.S. energy imports, and more self-sufficient, prosperous, and confident.
As Canada works to diversify its trade relationships and strengthen its economic independence, Nova Scotia is doing its part – developing natural resources, attracting capital investment, and creating real opportunities for families.
#5 - The World Wants More Canada
Europe has been asking Canada for energy for years, as it looks to diversify supply chains towards more reliable suppliers. Right now, the US provides nearly two-thirds of Europe's LNG imports, while European officials are cautious about over-reliance on any single supplier.
Canada's East Coast sits on the Atlantic doorstep of Europe, with some of the largest untapped offshore oil and natural gas reserves in North America. Canada is a stable, reliable democracy and a staunch European ally.
Nova Scotia is exactly the kind of reliable partner the world is looking for right now. Developing more of Nova Scotia's resources is not just a provincial economic strategy but also a direct contribution to global energy security while benefitting Canadians here at home.
