In a country blessed with an abundance of freshwater, hydroelectricity has become one of Canada’s greatest strengths. In fact, Canada is the world’s third-largest producer of hydroelectricity.
And while Canadians make up just 0.5% of the world’s population, the country produces about 8% of the world’s hydropower. That energy reaches into everyday life in powerful ways.
Today, six out of every ten Canadian homes and businesses are powered by hydroelectricity. Nearly 16 million Canadians live in provinces where 90% or more of the electricity supply comes from hydro.
And in many of the provinces generating the most hydroelectric power, people also enjoy some of the lowest electricity prices in Canada.
This story is possible because water is everywhere here. About 9% of Canada’s land surface is covered by freshwater, with two million lakes and countless rivers and streams connecting communities from coast to coast.
As Canada looks to the future, supporting the development of new hydro dams can help deliver reliable power to generations of families, businesses, and industries still to come. Canada’s water has always been a source of life. It can also be a source of opportunity.
