Canada’s Ksi Lisims LNG in northern British Columbia has received its environmental certificate from provincial and federal authorities, clearing the way for construction to commence, should the project receive a positive final investment decision (FID) expected sometime in late 2025 [1].

What a huge win this is for Canadians and First Nations.

With an expected annual export capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the facility will help fuel Asia’s emerging market economies, where industrial modernization and improving living standards are projected to drive skyrocketing energy demand over the following decades [1][2].

“This milestone reflects the strength of Indigenous leadership and our commitment to sustainable economic self-determination,” said Eva Clayton, President of Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government, in a press release [3].

“Ksi Lisims LNG represents a transformational opportunity for all participating B.C. nations, and it will be developed in line with our Nation's high environmental standards. This is what Reconciliation looks like: a modern Treaty Nation once on the sidelines of our economy, now leading a project that will help write the next chapter of a stronger, more resilient Canada."

Ksi Lisims LNG will be built at Wil Milit, on Pearse Island, about 15 kilometres west of Gingolx. At 12 mtpa, its export capacity will be just shy of LNG Canada Phase 1, which began shipping natural gas to Asian markets in June.

Since 2014, the Nisga’a Nation has made a concerted effort to create a major LNG export facility on Nisga’a treaty lands [4]. However, the project proposal wasn’t officially filed with the provincial and federal governments until mid-2021.

In its final statement decision, the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) noted that Ksi Lisims LNG would have no significant residual adverse effects, and any cumulative effects could be managed accordingly through regulations and project planning [1][3].

Over its 40-year lifespan, the export facility is expected to provide thousands of well-paying jobs to northern B.C.'s remote municipalities and generate billions of dollars in government revenue. It will also help diversify Canada's natural gas export markets, maximize the value of our resources, and contribute to securing a more prosperous future for our families and communities.

Canadian Government Fully Supports Ksi Lisims LNG

“Ksi Lisims LNG will produce up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year,” stated Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, on LinkedIn.

“This approval sends a clear signal: Canada is open for business, and committed to the long-term strength of our responsible, low-carbon export and natural gas sectors. Ksi Lisims LNG will provide 140–160 shipments per year of low-carbon LNG to global markets, helping our allies reduce emissions by shifting away from higher-emission fuel sources, often provided by less reliable nations.”

At the provincial level, B.C. Premier David Eby has also put his full support behind LNG projects.

“There’s never been a more critical time to diversify our economy and reduce reliance on the U.S., and B.C. is leading the way in Canada, with clean electricity, skilled workers and strong partnerships with First Nations,” stated Eby [5].

“I want to congratulate Nisga’a Nation and their partners on this important project milestone and the opportunity it represents for the Nisga’a people and local communities.”

Canada Can’t Afford to Miss LNG Development

Ksi Lisims LNG’s approval is an uplifting economic opportunity for Canadians and First Nations communities. The project is expected to provide an average of 450 jobs on site during construction, rising to 800 jobs during peak times. During operations, approximately 200 to 350 jobs will be required on-site and at other locations within and outside the region. Thousands more indirect and induced jobs will be created during construction and operations.

Initial estimates found that Ksi Lisims LNG would be accompanied by several immense economic benefits: $2.5 billion in annual gross domestic product (GDP), 21,000 job opportunities, and $890 million in annual provincial and federal tax revenues [6].

For Canada’s remote municipalities, mega nation-building projects like these are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They offer Canadians and Indigenous Peoples the chance to participate in career training and secure good-paying jobs within their communities, allowing local businesses and governments to flourish.

LNG Development is Key to Canada's Economic Future

Ksi Lisims LNG is a cornerstone of Canada's long-term economic strategy, unlocking our nation's vast natural gas resources for new international markets. The entire project, including the PRGT supply pipeline, is expected to generate billions of dollars for our economy and create tens of thousands of jobs, thereby supporting significant government revenues for decades to come.

By diversifying our energy exports beyond the United States, Canadians can enhance our economic sovereignty and resilience in the global marketplace. This Indigenous-led initiative not only secures a prosperous future for Canadians but also marks a significant step forward in economic reconciliation and self-determination for First Nations.

Let’s get to work building the pipelines, power lines, LNG plants, mines, railways, ports, and roads that we need to secure our economic future.
