Canada’s natural resources don’t just power our homes, heat our businesses, and fuel our industries – they form the very foundation of the Canadian economy.
When people think of our natural resources, they might picture forests, farms, lakes, coastlines, or other landscapes that define our country. But the real story is beneath our feet: developing our energy, forestry, mining, and agricultural resources contributes hundreds of billions of dollars to the economy, accounting for one-fifth of Canada’s national economy.
The sector supports 3 million jobs nationwide, or 15% of employment from coast to coast – that’s roughly one in every seven jobs in Canada.
It’s also one of the strongest drivers of competitiveness. Labour productivity in Canada’s natural resources sector is 2.5 times higher than the overall Canadian industry average.
And when Canada trades with the world, these resources play an oversized role, making up roughly 50% of Canada’s merchandise exports every year.
So whether it’s jobs, trade, productivity, or growth, natural resources aren’t just part of Canada’s economy – they’re one of the foundations holding it up.
Supporting resource sector development – everything from oil and natural gas to forestry and mining and farming and renewables – means you’re supporting a stronger, more prosperous, and more sovereign Canada.
