The World Needs Canadian Energy

The World Needs Canadian Energy

For much of Canada’s history we have enjoyed a healthy bilateral trade relationship with our closest friend and ally, the United States.

In recent weeks, America has threatened to impose a massive tariff on all of our exports to them.

While we all obviously hope this issue can be resolved as swiftly as possible, this highlights the risk of solely relying on one major trading partner.

It’s time for Canada to take action and take control of our economic destiny by diversifying our access to international markets.

Canada’s largest trading partner, the United States, is threatening a trade war with our nation.

This is no small concern.

The goods that we sell to the United States make up 76.4% of all of our trade exports, which means our trade to the south is a key driving force behind all Canadian prosperity and the value of our dollar.

Anything that threatens our trade with our neighbours to the south, is therefore a threat to our entire economy and the pocketbooks of every Canadian family.

But Canadians would be mistaken to underestimate the importance that this trade plays in America’s economy as well. We are not the only ones benefiting from our long standing trade relationship.

The resources and energy that we sell to the United States are critical for their economy as well.

Canada is America’s single largest source of imported oil, which is a necessary input for nearly every facet of their society and modern standard of living.

Americans need Canadian oil, just as much as Canadians need American trade.

The trouble that we are facing is that we have left ourselves in a position where we are almost entirely reliant on a single international customer.

In reality, every major economy in the world needs our resources as well.

There is a large list of potential global trading partners that have been calling for our natural gas for the past several years.

There are also a number of major multi-billion dollar export infrastructure projects that have been delayed, cancelled or otherwise ignored by Canada’s government for far too long.

Two of the most prominent missed opportunities were the Northern Gateway and Energy East pipeline projects, along with numerous LNG projects, that would have opened up new opportunities for our energy to be exported around the world to diversify our economic opportunities.

It’s time for Canada to realize the true potential of our energy sector.

Let’s take action to reclaim our position of influence in the global economy.
