Majority of Canadians Support New Pipelines, Power Lines, Ports, Railways and Roads: POLL

polling shows majority of Canadians support nation-building projects

New internal polling from the Prime Minister’s Office shows that most Canadians overwhelmingly support new major projects of national interest, including highways, hydro plants, mines, pipelines, and LNG terminals [1]. The poll comes at a time when the federal government is looking to fast-track major economy-building projects, with the first five announced just yesterday.

The poll, conducted by the Privy Council Office (PCO) in June, asked respondents a series of questions about the types of major projects they would support. The results were astounding, with a majority of Canadians either somewhat supporting or strongly supporting everything from nuclear energy to new or expanded pipelines to port expansion and highways.

Below, we go over the results of the latest poll showing the urgency for Canada to develop its resources and diversify trading partners, and what it means for Canadians as we navigate our economy towards a brighter future.

All Projects Supported by Canadians

oil and natural gas support 900000 jobs across Canada

The call for new or expanded oil pipelines resonated strongly across the country, with enthusiasm for new projects particularly high in the prairies, but also at 70% or higher in nearly every region except Quebec, where still six out of ten people would support new pipelines.

Port expansion, new electricity transmission lines, and highways also saw significant support, polling at 78%, 79%, and 82%, respectively. Nuclear energy and carbon capture saw the lowest levels of support on the poll, at a respective 59% and 57%, although this still represents a majority of Canadians who want to see such projects advance.

Hydroelectricity projects saw the most extensive support nationwide, with the lowest level of support in Atlantic Canada, at 86%, respectively, and the highest support in British Columbia and Quebec, both polling at around 90% in favour.

Canada Needs to Start Building

natural resources are a major part of Canada's economic prosperity

The PMO polling shows a powerful consensus among Canadians, united behind a vision for a more prosperous and interconnected country. It is clear that from coast to coast, there is overwhelming agreement on the need to develop our natural resources and invest in new trade infrastructure to secure our economic future.

It could not be more critical that this resounding support now translates into action; the time to build is now. The poll reveals a clear mandate for advancing our job-creating, wealth-generating energy sector, with a majority in favour of new LNG export facilities and expanded oil pipelines. Canadians understand that these projects are not just partisan talking points; they are vital for creating jobs, diversifying trade, achieving energy security, and reinforcing our position as a reliable global supplier.

Furthermore, Canadians desire progress across all forms of nation-building projects. The overwhelming support for new hydroelectricity plants (88%), long-distance power lines (79%), and expanded ports (78%) demonstrates a united front for a modernized and resilient Canadian economy.

It is time to put our foot to the pedal, cut the regulatory red tape holding us back, and begin the crucial work of leveraging our natural advantages to secure our future.

This nationwide consensus provides a green light to move forward on all resource and trade infrastructure that will be foundational to our economic success for decades to come. So, let’s get to work!
