Doug Ford is absolutely right. To deal with U.S. tariffs and an increasingly challenging relationship with our largest export market and trading partner, Canada must start building new trade infrastructure to help secure our economic future.
In a speech addressed to Canadians on February 20th, 2025, during a campaign stop in Milton, the Premier of Ontario committed to supporting interprovincial trade and new projects such as pipelines, railways, airports, ports, and transmission lines. Ford was joined by Nova Scotia’s Premier Tim Houston, who also agreed that Canada needs to build new pipelines and reduce regulatory barriers affecting the trade of goods and services between provinces.
Ford’s speech was bang on; at a time when Canada’s economy is facing several challenges including low labour productivity, poor GDP per capita performance versus our peers, and now, tariffs on our exports to some of the world’s largest economies including China and the U.S., it is time to take control of our own economic destiny by diversifying our trade markets and expanding our domestic trade infrastructure.
Our future economic well-being and sovereignty may very well depend on it.
Below, we highlight some of Premier Ford’s speech that has resonated with Canadians right across our great nation.
