Doug Ford is absolutely right. To deal with U.S. tariffs and an increasingly challenging relationship with our largest export market and trading partner, Canada must start building new trade infrastructure to help secure our economic future.
In a speech addressed to Canadians on February 20th, 2025, during a campaign stop in Milton, the Premier of Ontario committed to supporting interprovincial trade and new projects such as pipelines, railways, airports, ports, and transmission lines. Ford was joined by Nova Scotia’s Premier Tim Houston, who also agreed that Canada needs to build new pipelines and reduce regulatory barriers affecting the trade of goods and services between provinces.
Ford’s speech was bang on; at a time when Canada’s economy is facing several challenges including low labour productivity, poor GDP per capita performance versus our peers, and now, tariffs on our exports to some of the world’s largest economies including China and the U.S., it is time to take control of our own economic destiny by diversifying our trade markets and expanding our domestic trade infrastructure.
Our future economic well-being and sovereignty may very well depend on it.
Below, we highlight some of Premier Ford’s speech that has resonated with Canadians right across our great nation.

SPEECH TEXT
“So everyone's heard of the Ring of Fire. This has been going on for 25 years. Assessment after assessment after assessment after assessment. What are we going to have assessments the rest of our lives while America and the rest of the world are trying to eat our lunch? One of the most powerful tools we have in Canada is our energy and our critical minerals.
Enough of the assessments and waiting around and... People up north want the critical minerals, they want the forestry, they want jobs and security. And there's no one that wants jobs and more security than the First Nations communities that I've talked to up there and I've mentioned just three of them that will bring jobs and opportunities and electricity to their communities…”

“Just like the Canadian Pacific Railway, connected and united a young Canada, a new generation of infrastructure and resource projects will bring our country together. They'll reduce our dependence on the United States, create new opportunities for Canadian workers, usher in a new century of Canadian prosperity.
New pipelines, transmission lines, more rail lines, airports and ports. We need to build them. We need to bring Canadian oil and gas, critical minerals, energy and electricity to new markets and new customers.
And we need to diversify our trade and maximize our leverage on a global stage…”

“A re-elected PC government stands ready to support Energy East, Northern Gateway, and pipeline projects to Canada's northern coast. Provinces and territories are doing our part. We're cutting the red tape and we're ready to build with the Ring of Fire, the largest deposit of critical minerals in the entire world and the most ambitious plan to build out nuclear power in the world right here in Ontario, including the first small modular reactor in the G7.
Ontario is ready to help build the future of Canada. But I have to be clear. Right now, today, the biggest barrier blocking us from getting our immense resources to market, to getting our critical minerals out of the ground, or building the nuclear power plants that will fuel our economic growth for decades to come, it's not in Washington, Moscow or Beijing.
It's right here in Ottawa. We need the federal government to get out of the way. We need the federal government to cut its layers and layers of bureaucracy in red tape by scrapping impact assessment requirements that raise costs, slow down approvals and stop provinces and territories from building."
We 100% Agree with Premier Ford
Premier Ford's powerful message highlights a critical crossroads for Canada's economic future. His call for new infrastructure development - including pipelines, transmission lines, rail networks, and ports - represents a crucial step toward reducing our dependence on U.S. markets and strengthening our economic sovereignty.
The emphasis on developing the Ring of Fire's critical minerals and expanding nuclear power capabilities demonstrates the immense resource and economic potential lying within our borders.
It’s time to stop with the endless regulatory assessments and delays, and start getting resource projects built. As global competition intensifies and trade relationships evolve, Canada must take decisive action to secure its economic future through strategic infrastructure development and resource investment, creating a stronger, more prosperous future for our families.
